Bible Study on Marriage

Drew Berding

Can 1 Thessalonians be used for a Bible study on marriage?

You never know who is watching you! Apparently several couples had watched Marilyn and me and saw that we really had a rich marriage and that our three teenage kids were happy and active at church. These couples came to us and asked if we would lead a home Bible study on marriage. After prayer and careful consideration we agreed.

They asked what material we would use. Would we use a Christian book on marriage? I replied that the best book on marriage was the Bible. The next assumption they had was that we would use traditional chapters like Ephesians 5.

I said, no, that we would use First Thessalonians. They countered that there was absolutely nothing in that book on marriage. I agreed, but said we would look at each chapter to learn what principles were taught, then we would see how those principles could be applied to our marriages.

The next five weeks were the richest Bible study I have ever experienced. Each couple was so blessed. Now forty years later, these couples are still enjoying God’s blessings of being together.
