Wet Paint

Drew Berding

Really?

This is a true story. I overheard two young women talking with each other:

Tomorrow is my 21st birthday.

Oh, happy birthday. Are you going out drinking?

No.

Why not?

I’ve already done that. Anyway, it wouldn’t be any fun anymore because it’s legal now!

Isn’t that the truth! We are attracted to things that are wrong. It’s sort of like the sign that says “Wet paint – – – do not touch.” Of course, we want to touch it to find out if it’s really wet.

This is exactly what happened in the garden of Eden. God told them not to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil so of course that’s the tree they wanted to eat from in spite of having thousands of other fruit trees from which to choose.

It’s sure fortunate that He did not mention the Tree of Life or else they would have tried that one also and been stuck in a sinful state for eternity1. To prevent that, God stationed an Angel with a flaming sword at the entrance to the Garden of Eden2 so that they would not be eternally sinful. God was looking forward to the day when Jesus would pay for that sin and make us righteous by faith.

  1. Gen 3:21, Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”.
  2. Gen 3:24, So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.
